The Tarkwa District Court has fined a 29-year-old illegal miner, George Tetteh, GH¢1,500.00 for stealing two motorbikes valued GH¢25,800.
Tetteh who was charged with two counts of stealing, pleaded guilty to the offences, and the presiding judge, Mr Charles Owusu Nsiah, convicted him on his own plea of guilty. In default of the fine, Tetteh would serve six months in prison in hard labour.
Prosecuting, Police Inspector Patrick Essien told the court that the complainants, Douglas Tismark, and Mawuli Dauvor, a teacher, reside at Aboso Zion city in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.
He said on November 21, last year, at about 0400 hours, the Police Regional Operations Unit, Tarkwa received a tip-off from ananonymous caller that Tetteh who was lodging at Delta hotel in Tarkwa had brought an Apsonic and Royal motorbikes to the hotel and suspected they were stolen.
The prosecution said based on the information, Police officers were dispatched to the hotel where they met Tetteh and interrogated him, but he could not admit ownership of the motorbikes, so he was arrested and together with the motorbikes sent to the police station.
Inspector Essien said when the police further interrogated Tetteh, he disclosed that he stole the motorbikes from two different houses at Aboso Zion city.
According prosecution, Tetteh then led the police to the said houses where the owners Dauvor and Tismark were met and they confirmed losing their motorbikes during enquiries.
