Newly sworn-in Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has outlined his vision to tackle Ghana’s economic challenges, focusing on reducing inflation, stabilising the exchange rate and maintaining fiscal discipline.
Speaking to the staff of the Finance Ministry last week, Thursday, during his first official day in office, Dr. Forson pledged to improve on the lives of Ghanaians, whilst addressing key financial obligations and structural challenges.
He also emphasised that his tenure would prioritise job creation, fiscal responsibility and economic stability.
“Let us work together to better the lot of Ghanaians,” he stated, adding “Our work here is not just about numbers; it is about real impact on the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.”
Dr. Forson underscored the urgency of addressing Ghana’s mounting debts and challenges in the energy sector.
With a critical GH¢6.1 billion bond payment due in February 2025, he called for a collective effort to steer the nation’s finances back on track.
“We will work tirelessly to reduce inflation, stabilise the exchange rate and create job opportunities for Ghanaians. Every decision we make will be aimed at improving the financial situation of Ghanaian families and businesses,” he said.
The Minister also announced plans to establish a Fiscal Institute aimed at training heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as leaders of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to improve on public financial management.
“This institute will ensure that public financial management is transparent, effective and accountable at every level,” Dr. Forson explained.
Dr. Forson’s assumption of office was marked by a tour of the Ministry’s facilities, during which he expressed excitement about returning to the Ministry after eight years.
He reaffirmed his commitment to fiscal reforms and underscored the significance of the Ministry of Finance as the backbone of government operations.
He noted that stabilising the economy would require consistent effort, innovative strategies and a focus on the well-being of Ghanaians.
“We are here to serve the people and we will constantly be mindful of their needs,” he concluded.
With significant economic challenges on the horizon, Dr. Forson’s leadership will be critical in shaping Ghana’s financial future.
Accompanying him was Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who underscored the importance of teamwork in overcoming the country’s financial hurdles.
“The work ahead will require dedication, creativity and hard work,” Mr. Kwetey remarked. “But I am confident that under Ato Forson’s leadership, we can make a meaningful difference.”
Chief Director Eva Mends pledged the Ministry’s full support for Dr. Forson, assuring him of their commitment to achieving his goals and delivering results mandated by President John Mhama.
