Honesty, character will determine voters’ choice in 2024 -Survey

As Ghana prepares for its upcoming general elections in December 2024 honesty, character and campaign promises have emerged as the leading factors guiding voters’ choices, according to the latest Afrobarometer Survey.

The Survey reveals that the majority of Ghanaians prioritise candidate’s honesty (90%), followed closely by character (88%) and campaign promises (59%) as decisive criteria.

The Survey results, released by Afrobarometer – a pan-African survey research network – shows that majority (58%) of Ghanaians intend to vote for both presidential and parliamentary candidates from the same political party.

Only 15% plan to split their votes between different parties, while a small fraction (6%) indicate that they will support independent candidates.

Despite ongoing concerns about political violence, the survey suggests that Ghanaians feel relatively secure during the election season.

Over 85% reported experiencing little or no fear of political intimidation or violence in the previous 2020 campaign period, with only 14% expressing any significant concern.

The survey also highlights Ghanaian citizens’ enduring faith in the democratic process. A strong majority (81%) consider elections the best means of choosing their leaders, with support for elections remaining consistently above 80% for over two decades.

The Afrobarometer survey was conducted in August 2024 by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development.

The team interviewed a nationally representative sample of 2,400 adult Ghanaians, with results carrying a margin of error fitting national projections.

Afrobarometer, a non-partisan research network, provides critical insights into African views on democracy, governance, and quality of life.

The organisation has conducted nine survey rounds across 42 African countries since its establishment in 1999.

The current round, launched in January 2024, continues to gather valuable data through face-to-face interviews conducted in respondents’ preferred languages.
