Haruna, Ato Neck-and-Neck in NDC Presidential Race

A new data release by the Global Infoanalytics has projected Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for Tamale South, and Dr. Ato Forson, Member of Parliament for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam Constituency, as the leading candidates likely to become the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a September–December online tracking poll shared via the official Facebook account of the Global Infoanalytics, eight candidates Haruna Iddrisu, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Julius Debrah, Ato Forson, Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and others/Alabi—were tracked.

Among them, Haruna and Ato put up a commanding lead, raising questions about the future of Johnson Asiedu Nketiah ,Julius Debrah, Jane Naana Opku Agyeman and other candidates.

In nominal terms, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu increased his votes from 27.2% in September to 27.8% in December, while Ato Forson, who heads the Ministry of Finance, leapfrogged from 13% to 27.9%, representing a percentage increase of 114.6%, putting the entire race into a new contest.

Chairman of the governing NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, experienced a sluggish improvement, recording 23.4% in September and 23.7% in December, while Chief of Staff Julius Debrah suffered a decline in popularity, plummeting from 13.8% to 4.4%.

Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, a novice in the race, maintained 7%, while Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku lost about 10 percentage points, dropping from 11.4% to 1.6% . Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also fell steadily, recording 6.6% in September and 4.4% in December. Others/Alabi experienced a drop from 4.7% to 3.0%.

The data, authored by Mussa Dankwah, highlights a significant shift in support among NDC voters, positioning Haruna Iddrisu and Ato Forson as frontrunners heading into the party’s contest for the presidential flagbearer.
