GWCL’s broken pipes creating havoc @ Awoshie water works

Each day, thousands of gallons of processed water run waste due to unattended broken main pipelines at Awoshie Water Works.

The broken main pipelines are not only causing financial loses to the state, but also deny some communities in Accra regular supplies of water from the Weija Dam.

These communities are Dansoman, Gbawe, Weija, Anyaa, Lapaz, and Darkuman among other areas.

As a result of the pressures from the pipelines, the lives and properties of residents living nearby are under constant threat.

One of such residents is a 70-year-old widow, Hajia Memuna Tetteh, whose building has suffered great damage and is gradually becoming a death trap.

The widow’s building has developed cracks, while her compound is soaked, due to water from the broken pipes.

She told The Chronicle during a visit to the vicinity last week, that part of the major pipelines run through her property, and was laid without her consent.

The septuagenarian said the case of Hajia Memuna Tetteh vs. Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has been decided by the Accra High Court in her favour, and she was even willing to sell the property to Water Company Limited to use it to serve the public.

She said although the High Court ordered GWCL in 2022 to compensate her, that directive was yet to be respected.

The widow said she had reported the broken pipes many times to GWCL, but not much had been done to salvage the situation.

The shocking states of the pipes, and the volumes of water that gushed out on a day basis, had created pools on her property, serving as a breeding ground for mosquito and other reptiles.

Sometimes, when the situation gets out of hand, the company would send excavators to dig the land to detect the problem, in the process creating other of challenges for her.

She added that water tanker drivers had taken advantage of the leaking pipes to make money off the state.

The widow is calling on the authorities to come to her aid, as health challenges that come with age are being compounded by mosquito bites and other diseases from the ponds created by the broken pipes.
