Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL) has handed over a GH¢176, 294.00 community water project to the chiefs and people of Old Subri in the Wassa East District of the Western Region.
GREL, in accordance with its commitment to providing clean and safe water for its host communities, held a brief handing over ceremony to formally mark the transfer of ownership and responsibility to the community.
The water project was constructed and funded by GREL as part of its corporate social responsibility.
The project comprises a mechanised water system, featuring two boreholes with three outlets, valued at GH¢176,294.00, with a capacity of 20,000 litres.
The handing over ceremony comes three weeks after some ‘criminals’ in Gyabenkrom destroyed a total of 40 hectare of rubber trees belonging to the rubber company.
The project which was commenced in 2021 encountered a minor setback initially, when the yield from the first borehole failed to meet the water requirements of the community.
Subsequently, a supplementary borehole was successfully sunk to complement the initial one and is estimated to serve approximately 1,400 people.
Present at the commissioning were Nana Kwabena Amponsah II, Divisional Chief of Wassa Subri, Nana Twumasi Ampaakwaw II, Chief of Old Subri, and his elders, Isaac Owusu Kumi, Assembly Member for Wassa Subri Electoral Area, and a few community members, and staff of GREL.
During the ceremony, the residents of Old Subri were encouraged to ensure proper maintenance of the project.
Nana Twumasi Ampaakwaw II thanked GREL for the effort in providing quality water for his community, and encouraged the company to continue liaising with the residents in meeting their developmental needs.
