The atmosphere was electric even before kick-off, with both clubs heavily hyping the encounter. In recent times, clashes between the two giants, Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko, have lost some of their glamour, and this was evident in their previous meeting in the President’s Cup, where attendance was disappointingly low. However, this latest showdown reignited excitement, as fans trooped to the stadium in impressive numbers to support their teams.

Super Clash

Both Hearts and Kotoko deserve commendation for the effective promotion of the match. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) also played its part and other clubs must learn from this effort to help elevate the league to the standard it deserves. Football lovers are drawn to games based on how they are marketed, making it crucial for the GFA and the teams to step up their promotional strategies.

FC Samartex players

In a fiercely contested Super Clash, Kotoko’s discipline, structure and clinical edge proved decisive. Hearts fought desperately for an equalizer in the dying minutes, urged on by a frustrated home crowd, but Kotoko’s defensive organisation held firm to secure all three points and bragging rights.

Other Matches

Across the other centers, the weekend delivered its share of drama. Heart of Lions continued their steady rise with a hard-earned 1–0 win over Berekum Chelsea, displaying resilience and improved game management.

In the Western Region, Holy Stars looked dominant as they swept aside Bibiani Gold Stars 2–0, further strengthening their home form. Holy Stars scored their first goal of the season against league heavyweights Hearts of Oak in their previous match, and that breakthrough clearly boosted their confidence heading into this fixture. Although Bibiani Gold Stars missed their prolific striker, Samuel Atta Kumi, Holy Stars were impressive and fully deserved the victory.

Karela United and Dreams FC played out a balanced 1–1 draw, with both sides creating opportunities but failing to take full control. League leaders Samartex maintained their impressive momentum with a narrow 1–0 win over Swedru All Blacks, keeping their title ambitions firmly on track. Samartex were the better side throughout, and the scoreline could have been more emphatic if not for indecisiveness in their attack.

Midfielder Hussein Mohammed renders apology

The most entertaining encounter came in Sunyani, where Young Apostles defeated Bechem United 3–2 in a thrilling end-to-end match filled with goals, energy and late drama. Young Apostles came from a goal down to secure the win. After suffering an away loss to defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars, they were determined to rewrite the script and did just that. For Bechem United, however, the crisis deepens. Both the manager and players must step up if they hope to remain in the top flight.

Unfortunate Incident

The weekend was also marred by an unfortunate incident after the final whistle in Accra, where Hearts of Oak’s Hussein Mohammed confronted the referee in a manner that violated the rules of the game. As a result, both the club and the player have been charged with breaches of Articles 16(2)(b) and 34(6)(d) of the GFA Disciplinary Code 2019 and the GFA Premier League Regulations, 2025.

They have until Tuesday, November 11, 2025, to respond to the charges. Incidents like this damage the league’s global image, especially when they occur in high-profile matches watched across the world. The GFA must ensure that appropriate sanctions are applied to serve as a deterrent.

But ultimately, Matchday Nine belonged to the Super Clash. Kotoko’s victory not only shakes up the league table but also intensifies the pressure on Hearts of Oak to find consistency as the season gathers pace.
