The government has been urged to prioritise the poultry industry to improve organic manure production.
Mr. Moses Asabil Jackson, proprietor of M.A.J. Farms at Manso Akropong in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region, made the call when a group of stakeholders, led by Mr. Abraham Odoom, former Member of Parliament for Twifo Attimokwa, visited his farm which is one of the biggest in the region, to assess his efforts at employing the youth in the agricultural sector.
Mr. Jackson stated that investment in the poultry industry would help farmers in the country not to over rely on foreign fertilisers which were currently scarce because of the Russian-Ukraine war.
According to him, massive investment in the poultry industry meant the droppings of the birds would be sufficient for farmers to fall on for fertiliser instead of relying on those which are mostly imported.
Mr. Daniel Acheampong, a professional teacher in the Amansie District, who has switched from the use of foreign fertilisers to the poultry droppings on his backyard garden for the past three years, also advised farmers to go in for the droppings to help improve their yields or produce.
Teacher Acheampong advised farmers not to over-rely on the foreign fertilisers as their sole source of improving production.
He explained that poultry droppings were beneficial and affordable for every farmer to adopt and apply.
