The project, revealed by Finance and Economic Development Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during the 2026 Fiscal Budget presentation, is part of the flagship Big Push Infrastructure Programme.
Described as Ghana’s first modern six-lane, bi-directional Class A expressway, the 198.7 km route will link Accra to the Ashanti Region via the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions. Dr. Forson explained that the new alignment will shorten the current travel distance by over 50 km, reducing it from 250 km to 198.7 km, while halving travel time and cutting transport costs by nearly 40%.
The project is also expected to create more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction. Beyond improving mobility, it will stimulate industrial parks, logistics hubs, and service economies along the corridor, boosting Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy and national competitiveness.
The expressway will feature eight major interchanges at Accra Hub, Adeiso, Asamankese, Akyem Oda, Ofoase, Lake Bosomtwe, and Kumasi, as well as three major bridges over the Birim and Pra Rivers, designed to ease urban congestion and strengthen regional connectivity.
