God’s Will-Purpose For Our Lives

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.  Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.” – Psalm19:1-2 (NIV)

INTRODUCTION

This article has been published before but we find it so relevant today.  Please meditate on it as you read on!

What is God’s will for my life is a question every Christian asks often. Sometimes God’s will seem so vague, so hard to know. But is that really the truth? Is God’s will so vague and so difficult to know? Maybe this is how we feel because we are expecting God to reveal something special to us while ignoring the revelation He has already given-His written WORD who is also His Son – the Lord Jesus Christ!

God created us for Himself – to love us, care for us and let us be the stewards of His creation and revealer of His purposes. Remember how we were created. God said “let us make man in our image, in our likeness and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth and over all the creatures that move along the ground – Genesis 1:26 lets read from 27-31 to get all the details.

SoGod created us in His image and for a relationship – a loving relationship where He trusted us enough to entrust the world He has created in our care.

What we do to and with ourselves; what we do to the environment and nature shows what kind of relationship we have with God and thus shows whether we are doing God’s will. The Bible has dozens of clear commands for us to follow such as:

  • Worship God only
  • Love your neighbour as well as your enemies
  • Pray for those who hate and despise you
  • Use your spiritual gifts
  • Do not lie
  • Do not covet
  • Do not steal
  • Obey God’s laws
  • Remain faithful
  • Stay married to one mate
  • Teach your children spiritual truths
  • Do not gossip
  • Be generous
  • Do not swear
  • Read God’s word regularly
  • Don’t let money control you
  • Let the Holy Spirit control your life.

We can go on and on. Isn’t that God’s will for our lives? My dear brothers and sisters, when we are ushered into eternity it won’t really matter what house, what car, or even what job we had. No! What will matter will be whether we have been faithful, loved our neighbour and come to know God intimately.

God is vitally interested in the details of our live but His real will is that we spend more and more time thinking about what is really important – our intimate and loving relationship with Him that manifests in living in obedience to Him. So let us find some answers from scripture to some burning questions about God’s will and purpose for our lives.

Does God Really Have a Plan for my Life?

  1. God cares about what we do. He cares about the details of our lives because these indicate the condition of our hearts – Psalm 139:3- “You discern my going out and my lifting deeds. You are familiar with all my ways.”
  2. God has wonderful things He wants to do/accomplish in us – Psalm 138:8a– “The Lord will fulfill His purposes for me;” Esther 4:13-17 – “who knows but that you have come royal position for such a time as this.”
  3. God’s plans for us are always for good. Unknown plans can be frightening but when the plans belong to God we can best assured that we can expect something marvellous – Jeremiah 29:11-for I know the plans that I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to destroy you. Plans to give you a future and a hope!”

What are Some of the Things we Should do to Discover God’s Will for our Lives

  1. We must actively seek God’s will – Proverbs 2:3-8- “and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.  He holds victory in store for the upright, He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for He guards the course of the just and protects the way of His faithful ones” (NIV).
  2. We must let God lead us from His word – Isaiah 2:3 – “come let us go into the mountain of the Lord…these He will teach us His way that we may obey.”
  3. Let’s give ourselves completely to knowing God’s will passionately and not casually – we have to read the word, study it, meditate on it and memorize it. Hosea 6:3 – “0 that we must know the Lord. Let us press on to Him! Then He will respond to us.”
  4. Let us pray to God, asking Him to reveal His will to us – Proverbs 2:6 – “For the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
  5. Sometimes the best way to know God’s will is to totally let go and allow God to have His wonderful way. We may learn more about His will for us to allow Him to work out His will in our lives. The first century disciples knew this and practiced it with great results – Acts 21:14 “When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, “The Lord’s will be done.”
