God Oversees The Disappointments Of Your Life

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”- Jeremiah 29:11

Introduction

Life is filled with moments of joy, achievement, and celebration. Yet, for every high, there are valleys of disappointment, pain, and unmet expectations. It is in these moments, when life’s dreams unravel and circumstances seem to spiral out of control, that we are often left questioning God’s plans and wondering why we face such heartache. The truth is, every believer will face disappointment at some point. However, what we must remember is that God is not absent in those moments of despair. In fact, He is deeply involved in the details, overseeing every aspect of our lives, even when our dreams don’t align with reality.

The Unexpected Twists in Life

The problem with dreams is that they often don’t play out the way we envisioned. Many people embark on life’s journey with big dreams—about their careers, marriages, families, or personal goals. But life happens. Circumstances change beyond our control. Marriages that once seemed solid face challenges, health deteriorates, jobs are lost, or opportunities slip through our fingers. These moments can leave us in shock, trying to process why things didn’t work out as planned.

It’s not uncommon to feel devastated when life’s twists disrupt our dreams. Often, we hold onto the illusion that if we do everything right—if we live morally, follow the rules, and try to honour God—things will always work out. Yet, bad things happen to good people. As Ecclesiastes 9:11 puts it, “Time and chance happen to them all.” This truth confronts us harshly, but it reminds us that the trials we face aren’t always punishments or consequences—they’re part of the human experience.

Many people, particularly men, struggle deeply when faced with the unexpected collapse of their dreams. It’s not unusual to find someone in the middle of a marital crisis or financial turmoil, shocked and unable to piece together the fragments of their life. For many, the question becomes, “Why me?”

But amid these trials, it’s essential to remember that God is in control, even when life seems chaotic. One anchor scripture that speaks to this truth is Jeremiah 29:11, where God declares, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

A Lesson in Trusting God

Jeremiah the prophet, known as the “weeping prophet,” lived through Israel’s most rebellious period. He was chosen by God to deliver messages of warning and repentance to a nation that constantly rejected him. Jeremiah experienced personal rejection, isolation, and pain as he faithfully carried out his mission. His experience mirrored the frustration and disappointment that many of us feel when we’ve done everything right, yet nothing seems to go as planned.

In the book of Lamentations, Jeremiah pours out his grief and sorrow. One passage in particular stands out: Lamentations 3:17-20, where he says, “My soul has been rejected from peace; I have forgotten happiness. So I say, ‘My strength has perished, and so has my hope from the LORD.’ Remember my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and bitterness. Surely my soul remembers and is bowed down within me.” These verses encapsulate the depths of despair that Jeremiah felt, a place where hope seemed entirely out of reach.

But the story doesn’t end there. In the very next verses, Jeremiah’s perspective shifts as he recalls the character of God: “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:21-23). Despite his overwhelming circumstances, Jeremiah remembered the steadfast love of God. In his despair, he chose to focus on God’s faithfulness, not the pain of his present moment.

God’s Sovereignty in Our Disappointments

It’s easy to get lost in the pain of disappointment, but Jeremiah’s story teaches us to shift our perspective. While life might not go as we planned, God’s sovereignty means that He is in control, even when we can’t see the bigger picture. Jeremiah came to understand that God was overseeing not just his personal suffering but the suffering of the entire nation. He recognized that God’s plan was far greater than his temporary pain. Likewise, when we face disappointments, we must consider the work of God and trust that He is in control.

One of the hardest things to do in moments of distress is to see beyond the present. When we are caught in the storms of life, it’s natural to focus on the immediate. We want relief; we want our situation to change now. However, trusting in God’s sovereignty means understanding that there is a divine purpose behind our suffering. Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” God’s plans are not always visible to us, but we can rest in the assurance that He is working all things together for our good.

Finding Hope in the Wilderness

When disappointment strikes, it’s easy to fall into despair. However, like Jeremiah, we need to remind ourselves of God’s promises. In Isaiah 40:31, we are told, “But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Waiting on God isn’t passive; it’s an active process of trusting Him, seeking His wisdom, and finding comfort in His Word.

In times of wilderness, when everything seems bleak, it is essential to hold onto the truth of who God is. He is faithful, and His mercies are new every morning. God knows exactly what we need and when we need it. When we place our hope in Him, He renews our strength, allowing us to persevere even in the face of adversity.

Conclusion

As we walk through seasons of disappointment, it’s important to remember that God is overseeing every detail of our lives. He sees the bigger picture, even when we don’t. The wilderness may be a difficult place to be, but it is not a place without purpose. In the wilderness, God is refining us, teaching us to trust Him, and reminding us that He is always present, even in our darkest moments.

If you find yourself in a tight place today, know that God is abundantly available to help you. Psalm 46:1 offers a powerful reminder: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” No matter how overwhelming your situation may feel, trust that God’s timing is perfect, and He will provide a well-timed help.

Disappointments are inevitable, but they are not the end of the story. Like Jeremiah, we must consider the work of God and place our hope in His faithfulness. When we do, we will see that God’s love never fails, and His plans are far greater than our own.
