The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA-CD) have announced the establishment of a joint committee to investigate a recent altercation between their personnel at the Kulungugu Border post in the Upper East region.
According to a joint statement released on July 27, 2024 the committee was formed in response to a video circulating on social media that captured the scuffle between officers from both institutions at the border post.
The statement was jointly signed by Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Michael Amoako-Atta, Communication & Public Affairs, and Deputy Commissioner Florence Asante, Head of Public Affairs, Ghana Revenue Authority.
In response to the incident, multiple meetings were convened between Mr. Kwame Asuah Takyi, Comptroller-General of Immigration, and Brigadier General Zibrim Bawah Ayorrogo, Commissioner of the Customs Division, to address the situation.
The newly formed committee is tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident and recommending measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Meanwhile, officers stationed at the Kulungugu Border Post have been directed to work under the supervision of the Border Security Committee (BOSEC) to manage any immediate issues while awaiting the committee’s findings.
The GIS and GRA-CD reaffirmed their commitment to national security and the smooth facilitation of trade and travel.
They emphasized that the public will be informed of the investigation’s results as soon as they are available.
Both institutions expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the incident and pledged to take steps to avoid future disruptions.
