The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says Ghana believes in the principle that the planet Earth belongs to all human beings.
According to him, under no circumstance should a powerful nation use her might to trample over those they classify as powerless.
“I think that in concluding, there is something I need to put on record. That is the response of Ghana towards the war in Europe. Our history has always been against great power domination in the affairs of the world, and it is the reason that we led the independence in Africa.
“We believe that this planet exists for all people; big powers, as well as small powers …that is the main reason for the position we have taken. It is a principled one to do with our history,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo made the point to buttress the position Ghana took on the Russia invasion of Ukraine, saying that the decision was based on principle.
President Akufo-Addo was speaking in a meeting between him and some ministers from Germany, who had called on him at Jubilee House yesterday.
According to him, the world knows what motivated Ghana to express her displeasure over the incident. He hoped the war will end soon for activities to return to normal, giving that the effects have been quite dire.
GHANA-GERMAN RELATIONS
In his actual address, President Akufo-Addo said there has always been a cordial relationship between Ghana and Germany. He indicated that over the years, the ties have been one of concrete actions and measures that have been taken, and that for him, it was absolutely critical.
President Akufo-Addo was happy that the delegation visited him, but called for a constant review of the relations between both countries.
He cited that the Ghana-German migration centre was doing an important work, a commendation which was on the back of migration discussion during the meeting.
He assured the German team that Ghana would do its best to support the centre to ensure that it continues to deliver on its mandate.
CLOSE PARTNERSHIP
Addressing President Akufo-Addo, the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Ms Svenja Schulze, indicated that it was important for her country to keep close partnership with Ghana, something Germany had been doing for years.
She commended Africa for making its voice heard on security matters across the globe. According to her, it was not only about the war in Ukraine, but also about the African continent.
She mentioned that her country was ready to help Ghana and other African countries to deal with the menace of spill over from the Sahel.
“Our journey here is about two main topics. It is the economic cooperation…the other one is migration…,” he stated.
The team, which included Mr. Hubertus Heil, Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) and Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Mr. Gilbert F. Houngbo are in Ghana to discuss how the economic cooperation of the two countries is working for Ghana.
In attendance were Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta , Minister for Employment and Labour Ignatius Baffour-Awuah and Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister Lariba Zeweira.
