Bail Granted

Four employees of Pziram Eye Clinic in Spintex, Greater Accra Region, have been granted bail after spending the weekend in police custody.

The accused, who are facing charges of conspiracy and stealing, were each granted bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be justified.

The court, presided over by Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, is expected to reconvene on June 14, 2025.

The accused – Charles OfoeAkunor, a nurse, Samuel Kutorglo and Anita Ayoni, both frontline health workers and Alyse DeasiAmenyedzi, a cashier have been charged with two counts: conspiracy to commit crime and stealing contrary to Sections 23 and 124(1) respectively of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Daniel Appiah-Ofori, the incident took place on January 2, 2025 when the four accused allegedly acted together with a common purpose to dishonestly appropriate GH¢475,000 belonging to Dr. Charles Mensah, an Ophthalmologist and CEO of Pziram Eye Clinic.

Brief

Brief facts presented in court revealed that the complainant, Dr. Mensah, noticed irregularities in the clinic’s financial records, where payments made by patients were not reflecting in the clinic’s merchant or bank accounts.

An internal audit covering the period from January 1, 2024 to January 1, 2025 confirmed that a total of GH¢475,000 had been misappropriated.

Upon being confronted, all four staff members denied any knowledge of the missing funds. However, after a formal police complaint was filed on January 22, 2025 they were arrested.

During interrogation, each admitted to taking various sums – GH¢3,500 by Charles Ofoe Akunor, GH¢1,600 by Alyse Amenyedzi, GH¢2,000 by Anita Ayoni, while Samuel Kutorglo acknowledged handling GH¢4,000 but claimed it went missing from his drawer.

Investigations concluded that the full GH¢475,000 had been dishonestly appropriated by the accused. They have since been charged and will reappear in court next month.
