Division 1 footballer Abdul Razak Lartey has been sentenced to 15 months in prison by the Circuit Court in Dansoman, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.
The sentence comprised three months for unlawful damage, an additional three months for unlawful entry and nine months for theft of items valued at GH¢2,500.00.
Razak, 31, entered a plea of guilty to all charges on July 24, 2024.
During the proceedings, he explained that he is a father of three—two boys and a girl—and that he is currently unemployed due to the lack of salary in Division 1 football.
He further revealed that his mother is blind and under his care, and he admitted that his actions were driven by financial desperation to support her.
The court was urged to consider Razak’s circumstances, emphasising his status as a first-time offender and his responsibilities towards his dependents.
The defense asked for leniency, arguing that Razak’s actions were motivated by his dire situation.
In delivering its judgement, the court acknowledged Razak’s remorse and the fact that the stolen items had been recovered.
However, it emphasised the premeditated nature of the crime and the need for a sentence that would deter others from similar offenses.
The judge balanced these considerations, resulting in a total of 15-month prison term to be served concurrently.
Case Background
Chief Inspector Nuarko, the police prosecuting officer, detailed the incident that led to Razak’s conviction.
On July 19, 2024 at around 11:00 a.m, complainant Hannah Torkpo, a trader, observed Razak carrying two steering wheels, which led her to suspect that they had been stolen from her residence.
Upon returning home, Torkpo found that the garage window had been damaged and the two Audi steering wheels were missing.
Torkpo reported the situation and Razak was apprehended with one of the stolen steering wheels.
He then assisted in recovering the second steering wheel.
Razak later admitted to police that he had scaled Torkpo’s wall, damaged the garage window and burglary proof and committed the theft.
After a thorough investigation, Razak was charged and brought before the court, where he has now received his sentence.
