The Akwatia Police have arrested a man, identified as Coffie Agyemang, for allegedly attempting to sell his three-year-old son for GH¢1 million, in a case that has shocked residents of the Eastern Region.

The suspect, a resident of Kwamang in the Denkyembour District, was apprehended following a tip-off to the police. According to reports, Agyemang allegedly confided in a friend about his plan to sell the child due to severe financial hardship. The friend promptly alerted the police.

Acting on the intelligence, police officers launched a covert operation, posing as potential buyers. Investigations indicate that negotiations were held and an amount of GH¢1 million was allegedly agreed upon.

The suspect was arrested after he reportedly brought the child to a pre-arranged meeting point to conclude the transaction. He was immediately taken into custody by officers who had laid surveillance at the location.

Police have also disclosed that there are allegations the suspect may have intended to kill the child for ritual purposes and later stage the death to appear as though it occurred elsewhere. Authorities say these claims are part of ongoing investigations.

Confirming the arrest, the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern South Police Command, DSP David Fianko Okyere, said police are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.

He added that the child has been placed in protective custody to ensure his safety while investigations continue.

Police have commended the vigilance of community members, stressing that the timely report and swift police action helped avert potential harm to the child.
