A barber and ex-convict, Vincent Gbetorglo, has been remanded into police custody by Her Ladyship Evelyn Asamoah, a High Court Judge with additional responsibility for the Circuit Court in Accra.

The accused, charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery, pleaded not guilty to both counts. His two alleged accomplices, identified as Peter Akakpo Dompe and Ali, remain at large.

The case, prosecuted by DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye for the Republic, has been adjourned to August 21, 2025.

Background of the Case

According to police investigators led by Detective Lance Corporal Julius Carlos Caesar, the incident occurred on January 1, 2025.

The complainant, Martin Obeng, a taxi driver residing at North Legon, was operating his Toyota Corolla taxi (registration number GM 292-16) around Madina Zongo Junction when he was hired by the accused persons for a ride to Haatso.

Upon reaching a section of the road near the ICGC Chapel at Haatso, one of the passengers asked to alight.

As Obeng parked the car, but was suddenly attacked. Vincent Gbetorglo allegedly held him from behind, while the other accomplices covered his face, tied him with a rope and forced him into the back seat.

Gbetorglo then took control of the car and drove to West Land, where the complainant was abandoned.

The Ex-convicts and his allegedly accomplices made away with the taxi cab (Toyota Corolla GM 292-16), a Samsung Galaxy A05 Smartphone, a Ghana Card and Driver’s License, car documents, two MTN SIM cards, GH¢13,000 loaded on one of the SIM cards and GH¢700 in cash.

Arrest and Investigation

On July 30, 2025, nearly seven months after the robbery, intelligence led to the arrest of Vincent Gbetorglo at the Accra Mall. A search conducted during his arrest recovered the complainant’s Samsung Galaxy A05 Smartphone and two MTN SIM cards.

One of the SIM cards (0550577314) was registered to Peter Akakpo Dompe, one of the suspects still at large, but was found in use by Gbetorglo. The second SIM (0596664877) was registered in Gbetorglo’s name.

A search at Gbetorglo’s residence in Kasoa Domeabra uncovered another Galaxy A05 phone and two keypad phones, one containing an additional SIM card (0256621365).

Criminal History

Vincent Gbetorglo is a Togolese national and a known ex-convict. In 2011, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison by the Cocoa Affairs Court. He was, however, released in 2023 after a successful appeal.

He is currently in lawful police custody as authorities continue efforts to arrest the remaining two suspects.

The case continues on August 21, 2025.
