Unknown gunmen in the evening of last Saturday shot and killed one Robert Quarshie, a former assembly member for Mangotsonya Otsebleku Electoral Area, near Afienya, in the Ningo Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region.
His wife, who suffered gunshot injuries is, however, responding to treatment at a local medical facility.
Information The Chronicle gathered from the scene revealed that at about 18:30 hrs of Saturday, December 3, 2022 the gunmen, numbering four, descended on a lady attendant at the Petro Bay filling station situated on the third class road between Afienya and Dodowa.
The men in arm gave warning shots, which compelled the attendant to take to her heels towards a containerised shop, but some of the armed men followed her.
The report had it that Mr Quarshie and the wife emerged from the shop and shouted for help, but was shot in the head, killing him instantly. His mistress was also shot in the arm and lower abdomen.
The gunmen reportedly took away the lady attendant’s mobile phones, GH¢300 and GH¢370 belonging to the company.
The current assembly member for the area, Mr Gabriel Doku, when contacted, confirmed the story and said that upon hearing about ten gunshots mistook them for Christmas explosives, only to realise a few minutes later that Mr Quarshie was killed.
He appealed to the public for information on the killers to be passed on to the police, who are investigating it. It is not clear if the gunmen had gone to rob the filling station or it was a contract killing, as being speculated in the community.
Information available to The Chronicle indicate that about three weeks ago, the entity which owns the filling station, Power Fuel Distribution Company Limited, had another fuel station at Asutsuare that experienced robbery by similar modus operandi.
Other sources alleged that his killing might be a mistaken identity for a particular person in land litigation, around the enclave of Afienya and Dawhenya. Police at the Tema Regional Command are investigating.
The Afienya general area has become notorious for gun attacks and eliminations.
On Sunday March 20, 2016, the Chief of Sota, Nene Teiko Teteku III and his two elders were assassinated on the same almost unmotorable stretch, between Afienya and Dodowa.
According to information, the dastardly attack and killing was because the Chief allegedly refused to append his signature on documents relating to the sale of land.
On Thursday, December 13, 2018 the Mankralo of the Prampram traditional area, Nene Atsuru Benta III, was struck by unknown gunmen on the Afienya-Appolonia road.
His assassination was highly suspected to have something to do with a lingering chieftaincy dispute, as he was returning from a meeting at the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs in Dodowa.
On Sunday, January 13, 2019 Mrs Josephine Asante, the Marketing and Public Affairs Manager at the Tema Port was found murdered in her Emefs Hillview Estates home, near Afienya.
