Eugene Boakye Antwi Tells NPP Members: There Is Hope

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for the Subin Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain resolute and avoid public discussions that will mar the party’s efforts to regain power in the 2028 general elections.

To him, there is hope of NPP coming back in 2028 and that nothing should be done to thwart that vision.

Speaking on Accra based United Television’s (UTV) show ‘Mpu ne Mpu’ on January 24, 2025, Mr Boakye Antwi emphasized that while the party must strategize for a comeback, its plans should remain confidential.

He assured party faithful of a massive rebranding effort which he believes is necessary for the NPP to regain its footing, after the party’s historic defeat in the 2024 elections.

The former MP described the 2024 election results as the worst in the party’s history since 1996, with the NPP securing only 88 parliamentary seats and 41% of the popular vote.

He attributed this outcome to leadership failures and advocated for the removal of the current National Executives to pave the way for a fresh and dynamic team to lead the party forward.

“We are talking about people who occupied positions in our party in power and are taking us to opposition, leaving us with 88 MPs and 41% of the popular vote,” he lamented.

He commended the party’s decision to set up an election review committee, chaired by Prof. Mike Ocquaye, which includes younger and more active senior members such as Dan Botwe, Joe Ghartey, Samuel Atta Akyea and O.B. Amoah.

He also urged party members to speak candidly during the review process to uncover the true causes of the defeat.

Furthermore, the former MP advocated for reforms within the party, including scrapping the delegate system and allowing all card-bearing members to vote in internal elections.

He believes this approach would reduce conflicts and promote unity.

Additionally, he proposed granting voting rights to former MPs and government appointees to foster inclusivity.

“As part of the rebuilding, the party must ensure tolerance for all, including members who strongly air their views,” he added.

While maintaining that the party’s strategy for the 2028 elections must remain confidential, Mr Boakye Antwi emphasised the need for strategic planning and rebranding.

In response to claims by the NPP General Secretary that spiritual factors contributed to the 2024 defeat, Boakye Antwi disagreed. He argued that elections are determined by Science, data and strategy, not spirituality.

Despite the setbacks, Boakye Antwi urged NPP members and supporters to remain hopeful, confident that the party would bounce back stronger in 2028.

“Reflect, rebuild, and recapture power come 2028 general elections,” he reiterated, calling for unity and dedication to the party’s cause.

“Eugene Boakye Antwi, known for his candid and courageous demeanor, served two terms as the MP for Subin and as Deputy Minister for Works and Housing.
