Madam Elizabeth Fremah, 38, was adjudged the Obuasi Municipal Best Farmer. A resident of Binsere, Madam Fremah is a cocoa farmer and has been actively involved in farming for the past 22 years.
She took home an Anglogold Ashanti sponsored motorised tricycle, a 40 inches Led TV, GTP wax print, 10 machetes, Sunphosate Glyphosate Weedicide, knapsack sprayer, wellington boot, brush cutter, portable seed planter, and five bars of keysoap.
In her speech Madam Fremah disclosed that she had to quit her job as a baker to venture into agriculture upon the advice of her husband.
She entreated more women to develop an interest in agriculture, since it had enormous benefits.
Mr. Elija Adansi-Bonah, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi, reiterated the need for farmers to focus more on adding value to agriculture products as an avenue for job creation.
He stated that value addition was important for agricultural growth, having the potential to transform the customer base of agricultural products, and expand revenue sources for producers to boost revenue generation, foreign exchange earnings, and create more jobs for the youth.
He encouraged farmers in the Obuasi Municipality to embrace value addition, which, he said, involved innovation and product modification through processing, packaging, craft, branding and quality assurance procedures using modern machines and technology.
The MCE revealed that the Obuasi Municipal Assembly would soon launch a programme to fight climate change, and was also poised to facilitate a process to grow more trees to complement the government’s efforts in the Green Ghana project.
He charged mining companies in Obuasi to join forces with the Assembly to fight climate change to save the environment for the future generation of children unborn.
