The Ghana Police Service has assured media practitioners of their safety during the upcoming 2024 General Elections, emphasising the critical role the press plays in ensuring a transparent and credible democratic process.
This commitment was made on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 during a stakeholder engagement at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
The meeting, led by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, brought together senior journalists, news editors and members of the Police Management Board to discuss collaborative efforts for a peaceful election.
In his address, IGP Dr. Dampare underscored the indispensable role of the media as the fourth estate in promoting democracy.
“The media is a key stakeholder in this year’s elections and it is our duty as law enforcement agency to ensure that journalists can work without fear, intimidation or interference,” he stated.
To ensure the safety of journalists, the IGP announced several strategic initiatives, including the availability of a media liaison Officers, who will be assigned to media houses across the country to serve as direct points of contact for addressing security concerns promptly.
Furthermore, there will be a toll-free emergency Lines, which have been procured through partnership with telecommunication companies, which will be available for journalists and the public to report incidents or request assistance.
The police will continue engaging with key stakeholders, including media organisations, to ensure a coordinated approach to election security.
Dr. Dampare emphasised the importance of maintaining Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa, noting that the collaboration between institutions like the Police and the media has been instrumental in achieving this status.
While assuring the safety of journalists, the IGP urged the media to uphold professionalism in their election coverage.
He stressed the need for accurate and balanced reporting, cautioning against the dissemination of misinformation and disinformation, which could incite unrest.
“We must work together to ensure this election is remembered for peace, security, and order,” he said, calling on all stakeholders to contribute to a harmonious electoral process.
Stakeholder Reactions
Participants at the meeting welcomed the Police’s proactive measures, with some journalists expressing hope that these initiatives would foster a safer working environment.
The stakeholder engagement is part of a broader series of consultations the Police have undertaken since the beginning of the year to prepare for the December elections.
