The Commonwealth Observer Group, led by former Botswana President, H.E. Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, has lauded Ghana’s 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, describing them as a shining example of democracy in the West African region.
Addressing journalists in Accra, Dr. Masisi praised the country’s electoral process as free, fair, transparent and decisive, commending the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies for their professionalism and dedication.
“Ghana remains the real star, the shining star in a region that badly needs the beam of your light,” Dr. Masisi said.
He encouraged Ghanaians to share their experiences with other Commonwealth nations to promote democratic values and peace.
The Commonwealth Observer Group, comprising 17 members, supported by a team from the Commonwealth Secretariat, was deployed across eight regions of Ghana to monitor the elections.
Dr. Masisi emphasised the vital role played by the National Election Security Taskforce, which ensured law and order during the elections.
He added that the exceptional performance of the Ghana Police Service, calling them “referees of law and order and keepers of peace without the use of force.”
Observers noted the professionalism, alertness and approachability of the police during their interactions across Ghana.
Post-Election Security Updates
The Observer Group acknowledged minor incidents but affirmed that the overall conduct of the elections met international standards for democratic practice.
Dr. Masisi concluded, “We thank the Ghanaian people, government and institutions for delivering an election like this. Your commitment to peace is a beacon of hope for the region.”
ACP Grace Akrofi, Director-General of the Public Affairs Directorate, confirmed the arrest of 123 suspects connected to election-related disturbances, emphasising that the police remained committed to maintaining peace.
She assured the public that intelligence-led operations and joint patrols with the military would continue to safeguard security nationwide.
As part of post-election measures, ACP Akrofi provided updates on efforts to maintain peace:
Recovery of stolen property, including a Nissan pickup belonging to a Member of Parliament,
Arrest of individuals involved in post-election disturbances and Intensified day and night patrols with military support.
Ongoing engagement with civil society and clergy to address security concerns.
