A driver, Eric Afful, has been remanded into police custody by the Circuit Court in Accra for allegedly conspiring with an accomplice, currently at large, to steal a police service vehicle valued at GH¢300,000.

The accused, whose plea was not taken, appeared before Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah on Friday, August 30, 2025.

Prosecutors say Afful acted together with one Acquah, who is currently at large, to steal a Toyota Hilux pick-up with registration number WR 1805-Z, belonging to the Ghana Police Service.

According to Chief Inspector Amanie Abel, who is leading the prosecution, the incident occurred on August 19, 2025 at Ashaley Botwe, a suburb of Accra.

The complainant, identified as the Commander of the National Patrol Unit of the Ghana Police Service, had returned home at about 7:00 pm and parked the official vehicle in front of his residence before retiring for the night.

The next morning, the vehicle was missing, prompting the commander to lodge a complaint at the Lakeside Estates Police Station.

Later that same day, at about 2:00 am, a police patrol team intercepted the vehicle, which was being driven by the accused, Eric Afful. During a search of the vehicle, officers found a police driving logbook and the complainant’s hospital ID card.

Afful was also found in possession of a bunch of Toyota ignition keys — three of which were later tested and found to start the stolen vehicle.

Initially, the accused claimed he had been sent by a friend to pick up a woman using the vehicle. However, when pressed by officers to contact the said friend, he failed to do so and eventually admitted to stealing the vehicle with Acquah, his alleged accomplice.

According to Afful, Acquah had gone ahead in a taxi towards Kasoa to meet a potential buyer from the Western Region.

Afful was arrested and taken to the Auto Theft Unit for further investigations, while the police vehicle was impounded as an exhibit. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are underway to apprehend Acquah. The court has remanded Afful into police custody until Thursday, September 4, 2025, after he informed the court that his lawyer would be present at the next hearing.
