As the nation reels under the biting effect from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams spillage, a clarion call has gone to the citizenry for all hands on deck approach in the affected areas.
The Director General of Police Administration, Commissioner of Police (COP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who made the call is of the believe that the situation, which need everyone’s contribution, must not be left to government alone.
The Director General on Tuesday donated relief items worth GHC60,000.00 (Sixty thousand Ghana cedis) to displaced persons at Tokpo, near Asutsuare in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region.
The Tokpo Roman Catholic Primary School is currently holding 1,200 (One thousand, two hundred) displaced persons from adjoining communities, whose homes have been submerged, following the spillage from the two dams.
The items are 20 (Twenty) bags of powdered corn, 10 (Ten) bags of corn dough, 10 (Ten) bags of cassava dough, 4 (Four) bags of sugar, 10 (Ten) bags of gari, 4 (Four) boxes of mosquito coils, 4 (Four) cartons of sardines, 6 (Six) boxes of cooking oil and 100 (Hundred) bags of satchet water.
Speaking to The Chronicle in an exclusive interview, the Commissioner noted that even though his land of birth, Tokpo Township, by the Lower Volta River, is not impacted by the devastating floods, except their farms, it has become a safe haven for people who have been evacuated from the adjoining communities, whose homes have been submerged.
He appealed not only to persons hailing from these communities, but also public spirited people to come to the aid of the distressed.
He stressed on the need for sufficient and regular water supplies to the people who need it most.
According to him, in the absence of regular water supplies, the people may be compelled by circumstances to drink contaminated water running through unhygienic sources such as sceptic tanks, cemeteries.
The Police boss went on that although Tokpo is not directly affected by the flooding, the fact that his land of birth is hosting the displaced persons, motivated him to give back to society, hence the effort.
