Prudence Osabutey, a pensioner who was allegedly duped off GH¢70,000.00 by a man claiming to be providing her with spiritual assistance, has told the Accra Circuit Court that a witness statement filed by the prosecution did not reflect the true statement she gave to the police.
According to her, she gave the statement at a time she was not in the right frame of mind, as well as signed it under duress.
The court, presided over by His Honour Oheneba Kufour, has ordered that her statement be retaken by the prosecution. The pensioner was allegedly defrauded by one Modesto Seddo, self-employed, somewhere in March 2022.
According to the facts of the case, the boyfriend of the pensioner introduced the accused to her as a friend, and they all became friends.
Later on, a misunderstanding ensued between the lovers, where the complainant decided to confide in the accused, and in the course of that the accused took advantage of the complainant and collected an amount of GH¢70,000.00 under the pretext of giving it to his spiritual father in Kumasi to cleanse her, but failed.
A report was made to the police for investigations where the accused was arrested and investigated. During investigation it was revealed that the accused tried to use the money to buy vehicles in Togo, but was swindled.
After investigations, he was charged for the offence, defrauding by false pretence, and brought before the court. The accused is currently on bail in the sum of GH¢70,000.00.
