Celebrating the Legacy of Saint Augustine of Hippo

August 28 marks the global celebration of the Feast Day of Saint Augustine of Hippo, the revered Patron Saint of St. Augustine’s College, Cape Coast—affectionately known as Augusco.

Established in 1930 as Ghana’s premier Catholic high school, Augusco has grown to embody the spirit of its motto, “Omnia Vincet Labor” (Perseverance Conquers All), and the teachings of its Patron Saint. This year’s Feast Day celebration offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the enduring values that have shaped the school into a beacon of excellence.

Saint Augustine, one of the most influential theologians in Christian history, exemplified a life dedicated to the pursuit of truth, wisdom, and spiritual growth. His teachings emphasize the importance of perseverance, humility, and intellectual rigor—qualities that continue to resonate deeply within the halls of St. Augustine’s College.

These principles have guided Augusco in its mission to provide “excellent Catholic education that equips students for leadership in every aspect of life,” and its vision to be “an outstanding Catholic school offering the highest quality of education in preparing the perfect citizen for the future.”

The celebration of the Feast Day is not just a moment to honour the past but also to engage with the present and future. The old boys of Augusco, known as APSUNIANS, are a testament to the school’s enduring impact.

Through the Old Boys Union (APSU), these alumni have consistently demonstrated their commitment to enhancing the quality of education at their alma mater, thereby upholding the school’s core values.

To mark this year’s Feast Day, a series of activities have been planned, beginning with a Public Lecture on Wednesday, August 28, at 5:30pm at Christ the King Parish Hall in Cantonments.

The lecture, themed “The Role of Alumni as Stakeholders in Enhancing Quality Education: A Case Study of APSU Over the Last 90 Years,” will be delivered by Mr. Joseph Connel, an illustrious alumnus from the Class of 1979 and the immediate past Headmaster of the College.

The event will be chaired by another distinguished APSUNIAN, Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, from the Class of 1988, who is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications.

The Sekondi-Takoradi branch will organise events from Saturday, August 24, to Sunday, September 1, including a Health Screening, Health Talk, talks at various Catholic SHS’s in Sekondi-Takoradi, Domestic Safety Talks, a Conference Day, and culminating in the Feast Day Mass at the Star of the Sea Cathedral on Sunday, September 1.

The Special Guest of Honour for these events is Most Rev. John Baptist Attakruh, Bishop of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese.

In Cape Coast, on Wednesday, August 28, the College Chaplaincy, in collaboration with APSU Central Region, will host a Feast Day event at 6:00pm at the Augusco Quadrangle, followed by a Reception at the Senior Staff Club House, University of Cape Coast.

In Accra, the Feast Day celebrations will culminate with a Mass on Sunday, September 1, at 9:30am at the St. Margaret Mary Catholic Parish in Dansoman.

The Mass will be celebrated by Most. Rev John Kobina Louis (Auxiliary Bishop of Accra) who happens to be a member of APSU class of 1983.

This spiritual gathering will not only celebrate the life and teachings of Saint Augustine but also reinforce the bonds that unite the Augusco community.

As the school looks forward to its centenary in just six years, the Feast Day of Saint Augustine serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of St. Augustine’s College. It is a time to honour the past, celebrate the present, and anticipate the future with hope and determination. Under the guidance of its Patron Saint, Augusco remains committed to shaping the lives of future leaders who will carry forward the values of perseverance, faith, and excellence.

In celebrating this Feast Day, we are reminded of the profound words of Saint Augustine himself: “Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.” With this faith, St. Augustine’s College continues its journey towards its centenary, inspired by the teachings of its Patron Saint and the unwavering commitment of its APSUNIANS.
