A businessman, Mr. Nathaniel Oppong Gyeniaw, has donated school uniforms and exercise books among other learning materials to the Brakwa Methodist Basic School at Brakwa in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa District in the Central Region.
The donation was his widow’s mite which was aimed at easing the burden of parents and significantly improve the standard of education at the basic level in the beneficiary community.
Speaking in an interview with The Chronicle, Mr. Gyeniaw stated that the provision of quality education at the basic level was the starting point from which all education-related issues could develop.
Following this, he said, he had always had a passion to support education in the community to ensure that more children could be enrolled in schools to be educated.
“So I started to support some of the schools with desks, because I once noted a scene where some of the pupils were in highly uncomfortable sitting positions during class sessions,” he said.
Explaining further, Mr. Gyeniaw stated that he visited his sister who was a teacher in school, and he was completely worried when he noticed that some of the pupils were without prescribed uniforms and exercise books.
As a result, he said, “I made a personal commitment to getting enough uniforms to be given to the pupils in my own small way, because education is a shared responsibility, and that is exactly what I did.”
He told The Chronicle that he had planned to support the nursery school with, at least, one hot meal a day, and had, therefore, liaised with the school authorities to know how best he could support.
The Superintendent Minister of the Brakwa Circuit of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Very Rev Emmanuel Dagbui, who received the items for onward distribution to the beneficiary pupils, praised Mr. Gyeniaw for the support.
With the provision of the uniforms and books, it was expected that pupils who went to school in tattered uniforms, and those without exercise books, could heave a sigh of relief.
The management of the school presented a citation to show their heartfelt appreciation to the Mr. Gyeniaw for his outstanding contribution to the development of education in the Brakwa Methodist Basic School.
It read: “It is with great honour that the GES, SMC, PTA, SISO, Headteacher, the staff and the entire Methodist Community honour you for your support to the school (donation of school uniforms, books, pens and many among others),”
