Bawumia promises 50% cut in electricity costs

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has pledged substantial reductions in electricity and public transport costs if elected in the upcoming presidential election.

Addressing a vibrant crowd at a rally in Dansoman, Bawumia promised a 50% cut in electricity costs and a 40% reduction in public transportation fares.

Bawumia outlined his plans to harness solar energy for power generation and introduce an electric bus transit system to achieve these cuts.

He emphasised that his administration would build on the NPP’s achievements in health infrastructure, roads, employment, education and digitalisation.

Highlighting his administration’s progress, Bawumia pointed to Ghana’s pioneering digital initiatives, including mobile money interoperability and extensive drone use in healthcare.

He said Ghana is the first to have introduced mobile money interoperability in Africa and the 2nd worldwide to make use of a digital address system. It is also the only country with the largest use of drones in healthcare delivery systems.

This, notwithstanding, he promised free education for people with disabilities (PWDs) as well as an annual quota for their employment.

He also promised to create one million digital jobs, enabling youth to work remotely for international employers, adding “1 million youth to be trained in digital skills. You will be in Ablekuma West and be working in America, Canada, Australia and Germany.”

Further commitments include free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, a ten-year driver’s license and a flat rate for port charges to enhance competitiveness with neighbouring Togo.

Bawumia also noted the significant improvements under his government, contrasting these with what he described as failures during John Dramani Mahama’s presidency.

In response to Mahama, Bawumia challenged him to a public debate, accusing the former president of failing to manage the economy effectively.

Ursula Owusu Ekuful, MP for Ablekuma West, defended Bawumia’s record, emphasising stable power supply and job creation under the NPP administration. She urged voters to avoid repeating past mistakes and support Bawumia’s vision for Ghana’s future.

The rally featured speeches from NPP figures, including Greater Accra Regional Chairman Divine Agorhom and parliamentary candidates from various constituencies. The event also included performances by popular Ghanaian artists Samini, Dada KB and Joyce Blessing, energising the crowd with their performances.
