Bawumia picks number one on ballot paper; Mahama is 8

The presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will be the number one on the ballot paper for the upcoming presidential election on December 7, 2024.

His main opponent, John Dramani Mahama, presidential candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is number eight.

The balloting for the positions on the various positions on the ballot paper was done in the evening of Friday, September 20, 2024, at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission, Accra.

Among others, the presidential candidate for the All People’s Party (APC), Dr. Hassan Ayariga, picked number nine.

Balloting for the positions for candidates sponsored by political parties was done separately from independent candidates.

For the candidates with no political party backing, Kofi Koranteng picked ten, George Twum Barima picked 11, Nana Kwame Bediako picked 12, and Alan KWADWO Kyerematen picked the last slot, 13.

The parties balloted twice. The first was to pick the position to pick for the main one.

The process did not go without confusion. The representatives of the NDC, Dr. Omane Boamah and Fifi Fiave Kwetey, raised concerns about alleged bias in the balloting.

They identified a particular ball, which they claimed was distinct and possibly offered an advantage to a candidate to choose a certain number.

After several minutes of argument and counterarguments, that ball was taken out, and the transparent bowl that contained the balls was changed to a coloured polythene bag.
