The flag bearers of the two leading political parties, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will today, Monday, September 9, 2024 file their nominations to contest the presidential seat on Saturday, December 7, this year.
Though the leader of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and that of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama are both filing their nominations at the head office of the Electoral Commission (EC), they have been scheduled to do so at separate times.
Whereas Dr. Bawumia will personally file his nomination at 9 a.m., the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah will, on behalf of Mr. Mahama, submit the forms at 2p.m.
Announcing the event for today, the General Secretary of the ruling NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said Dr. Bawumia will be accompanied by his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh and key party executives.
“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is pleased to announce to the general public that the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, will file his presidential nomination on Monday, September 9, 2024 at the Electoral Commission’s headquarters.
“The Vice President and Leader of the Party would be accompanied by his running mate and vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the party’s National chairman, the General Secretary, the majority leader in Parliament, the national campaign chairman, Mr. Dan Botwe and a few party leaders.
The statement further said that after submitting his presidential nomination, the presidential candidate would address party sympathisers and the general public at the party’s national headquarters at Asylum Down.
MAHAMA ANNOUNCES
On his Facebook page on Sunday, September 8, 2024 the leader of the opposition NDC, John Dramani Mahama, announced the filing of his nomination forms.
“My nomination forms as Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as Vice Presidential Candidate, will be formally submitted to the Electoral Commission on Monday at 2.00 pm.
“The submission of the forms by our National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, represents a pivotal step in our campaign for change on December 7. We are all in this together, working with Ghanaians to reset Ghana’s economy and ‘Build the Ghana we want together’,” the post said.
SECURITY
The EC headquarters and nearby places will be busy today, due to the filing process by these two parties.
Concerns about security preparations to handle the large crowd that will undoubtedly follow their parties and candidates to the location are on the table.
RECEIPT
The EC announced for the information of the general public that pursuant to Regulations 6, 7, and & of the Public Elections Regulations, 2020 (C.I. 127), it will receive nominations for the elections of President and Members of Parliament from Monday, September 9, to Friday, September 13, 2024.
Completed presidential nomination forms are to be delivered at the Head Office of the Commission between the hours of 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm each day.
