The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mr Mahama Ayariga is seeking compensation to the tune of GH¢500,000.00 for families of persons who lost their lives in the recent Bawku brutalities.
The MP is also seeking a restraining order against the members of the Ghana Armed Forces from further acts of brutalities in Bawku, in the exercise of their responsibilities to maintain peace in Bawku.
Furthermore, the MP wants adequate compensation to be given to those who suffered physical harm. The demands were contained in a letter written to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
It would be recalled that on January 31, military men who heard gun fire shots and attempted to intervene allegedly inflicted wounds on innocent people in the process.
Records show that amidst their search in finding those behind the shots, rather shot and killed seven innocent civilians including a little boy.
Information gathered also indicates that several others sustained injuries including the Assemblyman for Missiga Electoral Area who was physically assaulted by the military.
Mr. Ayariga expressed his disappointment in the action by the military personnel and urged the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the general public to help investigate the matter.
According to the MP, the fundamental human right to life of the deceased persons has been violated, as well as the international human rights protocol governing military intervention in civilian armed conflict and hence came up with the remedies to compensate the victims and their families.
