President John Dramani Mahama yesterday visited Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, the overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom in the North East Region, as part of his efforts to restore peace in Bawku.
During the meeting, President Mahama expressed gratitude for the paramount chief’s support during his election campaign and emphasised his commitment to resolving the Bawku conflict.
“I came here during the campaign to seek the blessing of my father for the elections that were pending,” President Mahama said.
“Two of your sons were contesting for the same position, which meant that a victory for either of us was a victory for you. So I brought the victory to you,” he said.
He acknowledged Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II concerns about the situation in Bawku, stating “I know he has not been sleeping because of what is happening in Bawku and it is giving him sleepless nights.”
President Mahama reiterated his campaign promise to prioritise peace, noting that this visit was his first major assignment outside Accra, since being sworn in on January 7.
The President appealed for patience and restraint from the Nayiri and his subjects, assuring them of his dedication to resolving the matter amicably.
He mentioned the ongoing process of forming his government and indicated plans to involve traditional leaders in the peace efforts.
“As soon as that is done, we might have to invite my father to come to Accra,” he said, alerting the Nayiri to a forthcoming invitation.
President Mahama also referenced discussions with former President Akufo-Addo about previous mediation efforts and plans to consult with other traditional leaders, including Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to build on those initiatives.
“I know that you, Yagbonwura and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, were the ones that solved the Dagbon problem,” he noted, expressing his intention to collaborate with these leaders in seeking a resolution for Bawku.
President Mahama concluded by thanking the paramount chief and praying for his good health to continue guiding the people.
