At least 22 people have been reportedly killed and as many as 60 wounded after a gunman went on a shooting spree in the northeastern state of Maine in the United States.
The carnage in Lewiston, Maine, began at about 7pm (00:00GMT) when the first of at least three shooting attacks was reported. Police first received calls about a shooter at a bowling alley, where a children’s event was taking place.
A short time later, another shooting struck a nearby bar and grill. A third shooting was reported at a Walmart Distribution Center shortly after 8pm (01:00GMT). Sirens roared throughout town following reports of a possible fourth shooting at about 9pm (02:00GMT).
City Councilor Robert McCarthy told broadcaster CNN that the death toll had risen from 16 to 22.
“My understanding is that they have a tentative identification … of the shooter at the bowling alley, confirmed 22 dead, many, many more injured,” McCarthy said.
Robert Card main suspect
Law enforcement authorities warned residents to stay indoors and lock doors. About 39,000 people live in Lewiston.
The Lewiston Police Department released a photo on its Facebook page of a person of interest, named as Robert Card.
“CARD should be considered armed and dangerous,” they wrote, urging members of the public not to approach him or make contact.
“We have literally hundreds of police officers working around the state of Maine to investigate this case to locate Mr Card, who is a person of interest,” Maine Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck told a news conference.
