Assembly Member for Aburi West gives hope to BECE candidates

In the quest to change the recent poor performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) among students in the Akuapem South Municipality of the Eastern Region, the Assembly Member for Aburi West, Daniel Asiamah, has organised a career guidance and leadership seminar dubbed “The Mindset.”

The career guidance and leadership seminar was aimed at providing a platform for successful and prominent individuals in the country to speak to the students, including those from Senior High Schools (SHS) within the Municipality.

The Aburi West Electoral Area Assembly member further donated mathematical sets to the candidates at the event, and charged them to work harder and pass their exams in order to drive home their individual aspirations.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Daniel Asiamah expressed worry over the poor performance of students in the BECE in the district, adding that the Akuapem South Municipality Education Directorate recorded a nearly 47% failure in 2022.

This, to him, prompted him to contribute his widow’s mite, through organising free extra classes for this year’s BECE candidates in the area towards a better narrative when it comes to issues of quality education within the Municipality.

The candidates are optimistic of improving their performance this year, but some are skeptical about mathematics.

Kwaku Sintim-Misa, a Ghanaian actor, Director, and satirist, better known in the showbiz industry as KSM, called for a revision of the methodology used by Ghanaian teachers for the teaching of mathematics, as it had become a national problem.

He commended the Assembly Member for the event, stating that it would help motivate the students to aim higher and have self-confidence in achieving their goals.

The Mindset brought very noticeable personalities from different faucets of life, including Amoako Asante Kakra , an Information Management System specialist, Francisca Amoah a.k.a Mame Koma Addo, an Assistant Director and TV Host, and Rodger Henaku Larbi, Human Resource Manager, Ghana Education Service (GES) Akuapem South Directorate.

The various speakers advised the students to be disciplined and have a positive mindset that everything was possible only when there was determination.

About 1,000 candidates from both public and private basic schools in the Akuapem South District are expected to write this year’s BECE which begins today, August 7 to August 11.
