Police are on a manhunt for a syndicate of robbers who have been terrorizing residents of Somanya, in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The group, which includes a female, described as a sniper, in twelve (12) days subjected the people to fear and panic, as they carried on with brazen robbery activities.
The latest was on Monday October 23, 2023 at about 19:00hours, when a gang of four armed persons struck the Gaso Filling station at the Ogome suburb of Somanya and robbed them of unspecified amounts.
As though not satisfied, the armed gangsters advanced menacingly to a mobile money vendor and at gunpoint robbed the merchant of GHC28,000.00 (Twenty eight thousand Ghana Cedis).
During these robberies, a filling station attendant and two eyewitnesses were shot.
Two of the injured are on admission at the Yilo Krobo Municipal Hospital, while the third person was treated and discharged at the Somanya Polyclinic.
About a fortnight ago, Wednesday October 11, 2023 the gang in a similar characteristic descended on the SP Gas filling station, located few meters away from the latest target at Ogome.
The female sniper led the onslaught by firing warning shots to ward off any potential threat to the criminal conduct.
They reportedly made away with unspecified amount of money. In both cases, the police’s endeavours were unsuccessful, as they managed to escape.
A highly placed source at the Police Headquarters, speaking to The Chronicle on the incident, was emphatic that the miscreants shall not be allowed to erode the gains so far achieved by the police in recent times, by bringing robbery to the barest minimum.
The source further said the engagements with the communities, personally led by the Chief Constable, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, is yielding positive results.
He promised an uncompromising enterprise with the syndicate, whose days he says are numbered.
The Somanya, Akorle and Agormeda enclave, which have become a hot bed for robbery is on the radar of the police, according to a highly placed source.
