Mr. Edem Senanu, Chairperson of the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption (AUABC), has advocated for the establishment of a special court to expedite the prosecution of corruption-related cases.

According to him, the current judicial system is slow in handling corruption cases, which can take up to seven years to resolve.

Mr. Senanu believes that a specialized court would help to strengthen the fight against corruption by providing a dedicated platform for corruption cases.

He made the call at the Regional Stakeholders Engagement on the formulation of the National Ethics and Anti-corruption Action Plan (NEACA 2026-3030) in Kumasi.

He noted that while there have been efforts to combat corruption, there are weaknesses in the system, particularly in terms of collaboration between agencies and the judiciary’s understanding of corruption cases.

Mr. Senanu emphasized the importance of building public capacity to condemn and fight corruption, making it a high-risk, low-gain activity.

According to him, we need specialized anti-corruption courts and trained lawyers to handle and fast-track corruption cases, because the current system is slow, and it takes years to resolve cases.

Mr. Degraft Johnson, from the office of the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, explained that Corruption remained a persistent challenge despite implementation of anti-corruption programmes.

He indicated that the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) scores have stagnated or declined, indicating little progress in public trust. He re-affirmed that the establishment of a special court would help to address the persistent challenge of corruption in Ghana and also help to build public trust and confidence in the system, promoting a culture of transparency and accountability.

He disclosed that the National Anti-corruption Action Plan (NACAP 2015-2024) concluded its implementation Cycle in the previous year.

Mr. Degraft Johnson reiterated that in line with the Government of Ghana’s continued commitment to promoting integrity and combating corruption, a new framework, the National Ethics and Anti-corruption Action Plan (NEACAP 2026-2030) is currently being developed.
