Mr. Freeman Amoah-Kyei, one of the contestants in the recent New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary in Assin North, has declared his full support for the winner, Mr. Charles Opoku.
According to Mr. Amoah-Kyei, the fierce contest between himself and Mr. Opoku during the primary formed part of democratic processes enshrined in the party’s constitution, and that they were not enemies.
Mr. Amoah-Kyei explained to The Chronicle in an exclusive interview that he remained a committed party member and would support Mr. Opoku with all his might.
“Parties go to primaries to select who should lead in a particular election and this is exactly what we did in Assin North last week.
“We all did clean campaign and I was looking forward to winning, but then the delegates decided otherwise, which I accepted and appreciated as well.
“Now our ultimate goal is to fight hard to win the seat from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) so that we can have a handsome majority in parliament,” he told The Chronicle.
According to Mr. Amoah-Kyei, he was ever prepared and ready to commit his all to supporting the elected candidate of the party, and called on all his supporters, and the party at large, to be united ahead of the elections.
“The primary is over and I want to make it clear that there is nothing like Amoah-Kyei supporters or Charles Opoku’s team or any other groups and camps that will bring about divisions,” he stated.
In view of this, he explained that he has already dissolved his campaign team and has also hit the grounds to campaign massively for the candidate, Charles Opoku.
He added, “I strongly believe that this is the surest means we, as a party, can present a formidable front to face the NDC off and reclaim the seat”.
NPP primary in Assin North
The ruling government’s party held its parliamentary primary in the Assin North Constituency last week to find a candidate in the run-up to the famous Assin North by-election.
This was necessitated by a unanimous decision by the Supreme Court, which barred Mr. James Gyakye Quayson from holding himself out as the elected Member of Parliament for the Assin North Constituency.
The Supreme Court indicated that the decision of the EC to allow Mr. James Gyakye Quayson to contest for the position in the 2020 elections constituted an unconstitutionality. The Supreme Court further urged Parliament to expunge Mr. Quayson’s name and all other details from the records of the legislative house.
A date has been set for a by-election to be held at the constituency in order to find a replacement for the embattled former legislature who has put himself up to be re-elected on the ticket of the NDC.
Mr. Freeman Amoah-Kyei squared it up with Mr. Charles Opoku as the main contestants for the single slot to lead the NPP in the by-election in the constituency.
