Ghana’s first documentary film detailing the origins of Kente, the captivating history and timeless beauty of this iconic textile, has been outdoored in Kumasi.
Dubbed “The Importance of Kente to Ghanaians & Black Africans” the film is on the intricate artistry, cultural and political significance of Ghana’s Kente fabric, which has evolved beyond just a cloth of Ghanaian royalty to a global political symbol in the US and countries around the world as a symbol of resistance among rights activists.
The film, by Amma Prempeh, a Executive Producer and Film Director, explored the evolution of Kente and the central role it plays in global politics.
It has since August 26, 2023 been premiered at the Golden Eagle Cinema inside the Kumasi City Mall.
In attendance were top royalty mixed with celebrities, high profile guests, and government officials, including Nana Apau Wiafe Ababio Sanwoansan, Chief of Heman, Nana Atta Poku Agyemang, Oheneba Owusu Afriyie IV, Otumfuo’s Apagyahene, Nana Adu Gyamfi Okumanim Bonsu II, Nana Barima Osei Kwadwo II, Otumfuo’s Mamensehene, Nana Obeng Panin II, Nana Nyarko Frimpomaa II, Queenmother of Bonwire), Mr. Akwasi Awua Ababio (Director of Diaspora Affairs, Office of the President of Ghana, Princess Fathia Nkrumah, Mr. Frederick Adjei Rudolph, and Ashanti Regional Director, Ghana Tourism Authority.
