Americans go to the polls tomorrow, why the elections are held on Tuesdays

Millions of Americans will head to the polls on November 5 to vote for either Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris or her Republican rival, Donald Trump. This year’s race for the White House will be one of the most unusual – and historically consequential – the nation has seen.  On Tuesday, November 5th, 2024 the next President and Vice President of the United States of America will be elected, as well as 1/3 of the U.S. Senators and all 435 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives will be chosen.

Ever wondered why U.S. Presidential elections are held on Tuesdays? This tradition began in 1845 when Congress established Election Day as the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

This decision took into account that America was predominantly agrarian. Farmers needed time to travel to polling stations after working on their farms, and Monday provided a full day for travel after Sunday. Over time, this practice has become a tradition that has endured.
