The leader of the Movement for Change, who is also an aspiring independent presidential candidate, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has demonstrated affection and empathy for the people of the Volta Region.
Over the weekend, he visited the displaced residents of the region and empathised with those counting their losses, following the havoc from the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.
The former Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, visited the people affected by the flooding, which has affected over 100 communities along the lower Volta Lake in the North, South and Central Tongu Districts in the Volta Region.
Addressing a gathering of traditional authorities of the Mepe Traditional area, Mr. Kyerematen expressed grief over the unfortunate flooding, especially how households belonging to the poor had been submerged by the spilled water from the dam.
He lamented the inability of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to fully deliver its mandate, as it is under-resourced. He indicated that the flooding incident should serve as a wake-up call for the government to adequately resource NADMO and invest in early warning systems.
He believes this would enable the institution to better deliver its mandate of saving lives and property during disaster.
Mr. Kyerematen, however, promised to solicit relief items for the victims and urged the government, corporate entities and well-to-do individuals to support the victims.
Mr. Kyerematen was led by the North Tongu District Chief Executive, Osborn Fenu, during his tour and interaction with people in the affected areas.
PROMISE
His visit was also in fulfillment of his earlier promise to the people of the region during his campaign to be the flagbearer of the NPP and to step into the shoes of the late President Jerry John Rawlings and be their godfather.
Alan, on Monday, July 17, 2023 assured the people of the Volta region that he was prepared to take up the mantle of late President Jerry John Rawlings as their godfather, should they support him in winning the presidency.
He was addressing delegates from various constituencies who gathered at Aflao in Ketu South, Dzodze in the North and Sogakope in Central Tongu respectively.
Mr. Kyerematen urged the delegates in the region to throw their support behind him in the November NPP primary. which he was then contesting and eventually in the 2024 elections, to become President of the nation so that he can continue with the positive role the late President played in the development of the region.
To some wild applause, Kyerematen said he remained the only candidate who could march the NDC ‘boot-for-boot’ even in their stronghold of the Volta region.
He had assured delegates that when voted for, he would change their fortunes by putting in a scheme to earn them monthly salaries.
SPILLAGE
Reports indicate that over 4000 residents in the Volta Region, southeastern part of Ghana, have been displaced. The spillage of the Akosombo dam has caused destruction to properties, including submerging buildings
The Volta River Authority had issued notice to residents about the intended spillage and advised inhabitants to relocate to higher grounds. Some relief items have since been sent to the location, coupled with rescue services from the Ghana Armed Forces and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
