Akrokerri College Past students threaten demo against encroachment by chiefs

Past students of the prestigious Akrokerri College of Education, one of the 46 public Colleges of Education, have declared their intention to protest against the encroachment of lands vested in the College.

The chief of Akrokerri, Nana Owusu Sampah, who died in 1980, released the land for the edtablishment of the then Akrokerri Teacher Training College in 1962.

However, Traditional authorities in the locality, led by Nana Serwaa Bruwaa II, the Queen mother and Nana Kofi Berchie the Gyasehene and Regent are accused of selling parts of the land allocated to the school.

As a result, past students of the College are threatening to embark on a demonstration to halt the chiefs in their tracks and protect the lands for future infrastructural expansion.

On Thursday, October 24, 2024 the issue came up when Dr. Ben Otchere-Ankrah, a lecturer of the Central University and other panellists, including Prof. Kofi Agyekum and Lawyer Henry Kwabena Kokofu, raised concerns about the unfortunate development, during the discussion segment of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show programme, hosted by Kwame Sefa Kaye.

Dr. Otchere-Ankrah intends to petition the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to sanction chiefs who are found culpable of the practice to protect his Alma mater.

Residents are complaining that one Akwasi Yeboah is behind allocation of the lands to prospective developers on behalf of the chiefs.

School Management Committee of the local Practice School have corroborated the allegations, as their premises, which falls under the lands, belonging to the College of Education.

Nana Serwaa Bruwaa, the Queen mother of Akrokerri, told The Chronicle that the land in question belongs to the Asona clan.

She said the College authorities have raised concerns severally and she is yet to meet the stakeholders to address the development.

However, the residents cannot discern why the Asona clan must re-enter the land allocated to the College 62 years ago.

They called for a probe to ascertain who authorised the allocation and sale of those lands in question.

Meanwhile, Mr. Addai Poku Aikins, Chairman of the Akrokerri College Council has said his attention has been drawn to the development and that he has engaged Surveyors to redemarcate College lands to ascertain the truth or otherwise of the allegations and speak to the issues.
