Residents of Akorte, a farming community near Suhum, capital of the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region, have received the installation of three traditional leaders for the area amidst wild jubilation and celebration.
The relatively quiet community was charged with the drumming and singing of traditional songs when the kingmakers and traditional leaders of the area performed the colorful out-dooring ceremony of the three leaders.
The leaders are Nana Richard Kwasi Ako, Odikro, Nana Daniel Kwabena Dartey, Mankrodo, and Nana Janet Ama Asabea as the Queenmother.
Speaking on behalf of the newly installed traditional leaders, Nana Richard Kwasi Ako, who is the ceremonial head of the community, expressed his profound gratitude to the leaders who thought it prudent to install them as Odikro, Mankrado, and Queenmother for the area.
According to him, they would not relent in their effort and would not disappoint the kingmakers in their efforts to bring accelerated development to the area.
Throwing light on their respective roles, he indicated that the Odikro was the ceremonial head of the community, whilst the Mankrado and Queenmother were the owners of the community, hence, were called “Krowura” and supported the Chief respectively.
Giving a brief history of the area, the Odikro of Akortey continued that, his great-grandfather, by name Nana Yaw Akorte, bought the land that stretched from Obomofodensua to Adarkwa, all communities within the Suhum Municipality.
He explained that Nana Yaw Akorte settled at the then Pekyerekye, but after many years named the community after himself, hence, changed from Pekyerekye to the present Akorte.
The Odikro promised the residents of their collective commitment and resolve to rekindle the communal spirit demonstrated by their forefathers in order to improve the sanitation and general well-being of the people.
To him, the only powerful tonic for accelerated socio-economic development was quality education and healthcare, therefore, they (newly installed leaders) would support the Chief to construct a befitting school structure and clinic for the area.
