Mr Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, Member of Parliament (MP) for Akatsi North has presented a cheque to 95 tertiary students from his constituency to cover their school fees.
The beneficiaries, drawn from various universities, colleges of education, and nursing training institutions, received amounts ranging from GHS 2,400.00 to GHS 8,000.00, totaling GHS 400,000.00.
Mr Nortsu-Kotoe, who also chairs Parliament’s Education Committee, said the initiative began in 2013 after research revealed a gap in human resource development within the constituency.
He noted that over 70 per cent of his share of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) is allocated to fee payments.
“Akatsi North Constituency was created in 2012, and research showed we had limited resource persons to occupy positions.
“So, on assuming office as MP, I took it upon myself to develop human resources at all levels, and that has been the journey so far,” he stated.
The MP disclosed that GHS 500,000.00 has been budgeted for this year’s support, assuring that students who could not benefit immediately would be considered after completing the application and vetting process.
He explained that the intervention aims to enhance access to tertiary education, reduce poverty, and build the human resource base for the area’s development.
Touching on priority courses, Mr Nortsu-Kotoe said the constituency previously lacked professionals in science-related fields such as law, medicine, and engineering.
He added that skill development remains a focus, particularly for students entering technical universities to promote self-reliance.
He urged the beneficiaries to study hard and excel academically. The students expressed gratitude to the MP for his continuous support.
