In its quest to continue to mine responsibly while positively impacting the communities in which it operates, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine has cut the sod for the construction of a state-of-the-art Centre for the printing of mock examination papers in the Obuasi Municipality.
Mr. Jacob Edmund-Acquah, Senior Manager, Projects Services and Business Improvement of the company, noted at the ceremony that the overall cost of the project was GH¢2.4 million, and that it was aimed at improving the quality of education through infrastructure among others.
He mentioned that aside from the infrastructure projects, the company had been actively involved in training over 500 teachers, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to impart quality education.
The Municipal Director of Education, Mr. George Alfred Koomson, said the Examination Printing Centre had come at the right time, since it was going to alleviate the cost of printing annual mock examination papers for schools in Obuasi.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the Community Health and Planning Services (CHPS) Compound at Apitikooko, Mr. Eric Broni, Senior Manager Engineering at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine, noted that, when completed, the facility would provide medical services that would include pre and post natal care, child welfare services, and general out patient care, thus playing a crucial role in addressing the health care needs of the Apitikooko community.
He pointed out that the construction and furnishing of the project was estimated to cost GH¢3.5 million, and completed in seven months.
The Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Elijah Adansi Bonah, lauded the contribution of AngloGold towards the development of Obuasi, and said, with the construction of many CHPS compounds and health centres by the company, coupled with the Trauma Hospital being built by the government, it was becoming clear that, very soon, the town would become the hub of modern health care delivery in the Ashanti Region.
The Kunkahene, Nana Kwaku Ponko III, thanked AngloGold for the project and promised to make land available for other projects to uplift the image of the town.
