The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations continues to gather momentum as several continental heavyweights begin their group-stage journeys on Tuesday. With title contenders seeking strong starts and underdogs hoping to defy expectations, the day’s fixtures promise a compelling mix of ambition, pressure and opportunity across three crucial encounters.

Nigeria vs Tanzania
Last edition’s runners-up Nigeria begin their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Tanzania at the Fez Stadium on Tuesday, determined to make a strong opening statement. The Super Eagles came agonizingly close to glory last time, losing 2–1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the final, and redemption is firmly on the agenda after also missing out on qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Although a recent 2–1 friendly defeat to Egypt halted a generally positive run of results, Nigeria remains overwhelming favorites. Ranked 38th in the world, they boast superior quality and experience compared to Tanzania, who sit 74 places lower. The Taifa Stars arrive with little pressure and an eye on the 2027 tournament they will co-host, but confidence is low after seven winless matches. Given Nigeria’s attacking depth, a comfortable start is widely expected.

Tunisia vs Uganda
Tunisia kick off their AFCON campaign against Uganda at the Stade Olympique Annexe in Morocco, with hopes of claiming a second continental title. The Carthage Eagles last lifted the trophy on home soil in 2004 and arrive in strong form, particularly in World Cup qualification where they posted nine wins and a draw.

Uganda, meanwhile, enter the tournament with mixed momentum. While recent results have been encouraging, off-field administrative challenges have disrupted their preparations. The Cranes have struggled historically at AFCON, recording just one tournament victory since their 1978 runners-up finish. Tunisia’s consistency and experience make them favorites to collect maximum points.

Senegal vs Botswana
Group D action sees reigning 2021 champions Senegal face Botswana at the Grand Stade de Tanger. Senegal is among the tournament favorites, having cruised through qualification unbeaten while conceding just one goal. With leaders like Sadio Mané and strong squad depth, the Teranga Lions will be confident of starting strongly.

Botswana is appearing at only their second AFCON finals after a historic qualification campaign, highlighted by a crucial draw against Egypt. While the Zebras will fight bravely, Senegal’s quality and pedigree should prove decisive as they aim to continue their impressive opening-match record.
