Dome Kwabenya Member of Parliament, who is the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has said her party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would need her vote to win the 2024 elections.
According to the Minister for Gender and Children, who has become more popular on social media app, TikTok, through her dances, believes the party cannot give up on anyone, including her.
Taking inspiration from the theme for the party’s conference “Holding Together, Working Together,” which took place over the weekend, the MP, whose constituents have not seen her for months now, called for unity.
“This year’s conference theme perfectly embodies what we must do and stand for, as members of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo Tradition.
There is the need for us to stay united. Every single person and vote are needed in our singular quest to break the eight. We cannot give up on anyone,” she posted on her Facebook page.
VENDATTA
Adwoa Safo’s post comes at the back of what she described in her post as vendetta against her, but she said she has never wavered in her commitment to the ideals of the party and the President. She recalled how she has become a victim of a sustained political witch-hunt by certain elements in the NPP and in Parliament in the last few months, that she has been away from official duties, “albeit not intentionally.” She is sure these elements in the NPP and Parliament are working to achieve their own parochial goals.
The former deputy Majority Leader has been asking herself if this is happening because she is a woman who for just this one time needed some time off to deal with a “few personal issues.”
“In the face of all these, I have questioned why I have had to be treated differently by not enjoying the famous support of our party leadership, both in Parliament and at the party level, in my most difficult moments these past few months,” she quizzed.
DILIGENCE
Touting her credentials, Adwoa Safo said she has served the NPP with utmost diligence both in opposition and in government, adding that at all times she has put the fortunes of her family at the disposal of the party.
She claimed that at no point in time has she or her family withheld anything of theirs from the party, yet today, she is conveniently being called “a traitor and all manner of names with several schemes being put to play and employed to oust me from my position as MP and Minister.”
SACRIFICE
Adwoa Safo recalled the role she played in the Koforidua conference in 2018, that elected the immediate past leaders, which was on the heels of an emphatic victory by the party in 2016 and thereafter, securing another victory for the party in the 2020 elections.
She remarked that the theme for this year’s conference resonates with her current circumstances and brings back memories of her time as the Deputy Majority Leader in the 7th Parliament.
She recalled that during that time, as leader of the Women’s Caucus, together with the leadership of the Majority, they did their best to protect a colleague female MP, whose name Adwoa failed to mention. She said the woman had to be away in London for close to two years to take care of family issues.
According to Adwoa Safo, they shielded the MP on compassionate grounds because it involved her children, and thus did not go round making any hue and cry about her absence.
That, she added, was just one example of how the leadership protected one of their own in Parliament.
NPP NEW EXECUTIVES
While congratulating the new executives, she remarked that the onus lies on them to ensure the party hold on to each other and work together to break the eight.
However, in the face of clear political hounding and vendetta, as she put it, Adwoa Safo says she is eternally grateful to President Akufo-Addo.
PRIVILEGES COMMITTEE
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Privileges Committee of Parliament has presented its findings on the three absentee MPs, but could not take a decision on Adwoa Safo.
The reason is that the Committee could not, despite all efforts, have the Dome/Kwabenya MP appear before them to defend herself, like the two other MPs (Kennedy Agyapong and Henry Quartey) did.
This reporter has gathered that on grounds of natural justice, the committee could not take any decision on Adwoa Safo and that the fate of the MP now hangs in the balance, as the Committee will recommend to the plenary to take a decision on her.
MAJORITY LEADER
According to myjoyonline.com, the Majority Leader in Parliament has expressed his disappointment with Member for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo for accusing the caucus of witch-hunting her.
“I am surprised if she says leadership is witch-hunting her.
I think it is the most unfortunate and regrettable statement. For the past two months, I have not been engaging because I have sent numerous messages to her and she has not responded,” he said.
The Suame MP, however, said the decision by the Privileges Committee to refer its decision on Adwoa Safo to plenary is unconstitutional.
