A Special Investigative Team (SIT) has been constituted by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to probe the killings that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
The move follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, who on January 10, 2025 requested a thorough investigation into the incidents that happened four years apart.
According to a deep throat at the police headquarters, the IGP has responded to the President’s directive by establishing a team of highly skilled officers at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra.
The SIT, chaired by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe, has been tasked with submitting a detailed report within a specified timeline.
In a letter to the President, Dr. Dampare reportedly assured that all necessary resources would be allocated to the team to ensure a comprehensive and transparent investigation.
The Chronicle’s third eye within the Ghana Police Service disclosed that the investigation would build upon previous efforts by the IGP since assuming office in 2021.
It said the Cold Case Unit, established by Dr. Dampare, has been actively investigating unresolved crimes, including those related to the 2020 electoral violence.
The Cold Case Unit is reported to have made substantial progress in probing the 2020 election-related deaths, with some suspects already facing prosecution.
The IGP’s office is believed to have expressed confidence that the new SIT will further advance these efforts, bringing clarity and justice to the victims and their families.
President Mahama’s directive underscores the need for accountability and full closure for the families affected by the tragic events during the elections.
This is also uncovering the truth behind the violence and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
The killings during the 2020 and 2024 elections have been a source of public concern, sparking calls from various civil society groups, human rights organisations and citizens for thorough investigations.
