I am no longer a member of the NPP. There’s too much chaos in the party, Satan has taken over the party … He (Akufo-Addo) brought this calamity on … he (Akufo-Addo) was not a good leader… he (Akufo-Addo) is arrogant … erected a statue for himself… he (Akufo-Addo) hijacked the party and brought the party into ruins. – Dr Richard Amoako Baah, April, 2025
The signs were there – too glaring to ignore, but who would listen? We would talk and our speeches would fall on deaf ears. So, we go biblical: “He who has ears to hear; let him hear” (Matthew 11:15). Most of the respected personalities would “warn” NPP. Dr. Amoako-Baah, once head of Political Science at KNUST, a lover of J. B. Danquah, would brave the storm, and talk, and get labelled – an unrepentant saboteur. Dr. Frimpong Boateng, a Minister of the Environment, Science Technology and Innovation would issue a report, and get “knocked-out” by Nana Akufo-Addo and his cohorts. He would say on 24th July, 2024: “I subscribe to the ideas of the U.P. tradition; at the same time we have to honour Nkrumah who did so much for us… That’s how I see politics … (you don’t have to) demonise your opponents … if I had known what I know now, I wouldn’t have gone into NPP government”.
And Kwame Asare Obeng (Kwame A-Plus) MP for Gomoa Central Constituency, defeating the incumbent MP, Naana Eyiah Quansah, had warned (30/04/24) “Your lights are going out and you are still waiting to break the eight. It is you the member of NPP who should criticise the leadership of the country, saying what they are doing will destroy the government and the party’s chances in the future … Look at what NDC did at UPSA … This was what the NPP was known for, but now a lot of fools have infiltrated the rank and file of the political party and it is no longer attractive”.
A-Plus had been a thorn in the flesh of NDC and he had openly lampooned the NDC with “Aben bɛbom”, just as Daddy Lumba had over-indulged Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2012 with “Nana, oye winner”.
After the abysmal performance of NPP in the last 2024 elections – Mahama 56% Bawumia 41% (88 NPP MPs against 183 NDC MPs, Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP presidential candidate, decided to go on a “Thank You Tour” beginning on 24th April, 2025 at the NPP Asylum Down Headquarters, outlining the programme to pass through the Western Region, the Central Region, Northern… At the NPP Headquarters, Bawumia stated: “Unity is key in everything we do. We must build a strong party machinery that can win the next general elections… United we stand, divided we fall… No religion or tribe is a factor for my defeat: those saying I lost because I am a Muslim this is just propaganda… our defeat is internal and in re-building the party we need unity to win the next general elections…”
And the group on the “Thank You Tour”, which included the no-nonsense ex-MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, reached the Bono Region. There, come and hear the Bono Region NPP Chairman, Kwame Baffoe alias Abronye (Sabotage isn’t good) throwing tantrums at the large NPP membership but specifically at Kennedy Agyapong. Whoever thought Kennedy would keep silent over this must check the records. Hear Kennedy: “Obiaa nnye barima nkyen obiaa (No one is more valiant than others…) Those who don’t have money to finance the party are now talking as if they were “men” more than others”. Abronye revealed later that he was ready to “leave the NPP and fight Kennedy with my blood”.
In response, Kennedy revealed that he had helped Abronye with GH₵480,000 in his campaign for the chairmanship of the NPP in Bono Region. It was a free-for-all… Attack and counter-attack. Abronye alleged that Kennedy had supported A-Plus as an independent candidate to edge out the “institutional candidate” Naana Eyiah Quansah. Kennedy rants: “Who born dog?… you want to see another showdown?”. A case of political betrayal? Who would not prefer an honest enemy over a deceitful friend, as Marion Bekoe says?
Some panelists at various TV and radio stations (Royal, XYZ, Woezor, Oman, UTV, TV3, GTV, Metro, Joy Prime…) wonder what had attracted the rank and file (or rather delegates) of NPP to have chosen Abronye as Chairman of the party. Before becoming Chairman, Bono had over 10 NPP MPs in the Region (one for NDC); with Abronye as Chairman, it is only one NPP MP (ten for NDC). They ask whether Abronye is psychologically stable… (no more words because of our Fumesua connection). Chairman Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi) may even regret “apologising” to Kennedy. He is brought into the fray. On the yet to be established Abronye’s own platform, he threatens there will be no ceasefire. Kuku-kuku no angyae a, keka-keka nso nngyae (if the tick-tick won’t stop, tock-tock won’t stop either).
Boakye Agyarko, a respected NPP stalwart steps in: “What was intended to restore our party’s shine and reconnect us with the grassroots is instead unravelling into bouts of discord, blame-shifting and internal strife… collateral damage… It is time to apply the brakes and reassess the direction of the “Thank You Tour” … The mission of the “Thank You Tour” must be accomplished in a manner worthy of our party’s proud legacy”.
Cynthia Morrison, who knows Abronye and Kennedy very well, advises Kennedy: “Don’t get that low; who does not know Abronye… Wo ne kraman di agoro a, ota fere w’ano (if you play with a canine, it will lick your lips). Auntie Cynthia bemoans: “Chairman Stephen Ntim is already tired. Asiedu Nketiah (NDC) is a “small” man, but he has command… Stephen Ntim cannot be Chairman again. Ntim should take a bow, together with all the executives of the NPP”. Okatakyie Afrifa advises Abronye to “stop your foolishness”. Is that how to build a party? W’adwene nnye correct (your brain is not stable) … Don’t do this nonsense”.
Afrifa adds: “Abronye’s attitude is causing disaffection for the party”. He turns to Kennedy: “…You don’t have to respond to every issue as a leader, leave some to those under you…” recall Victor Owusu, R.R. Amponsah, … B.J. da Rocha, Lawyer Obeng Manu.
Some people think that, for now, it is only those that can command cedis that can lead the party”. Where are the sagacious people in NPP.
You will ask: “Where is the Prof. Mike Oquaye’s Report? The good old Professor has demonstrated his love for the NPP. He has done a yeoman’s job. But the rank-and-file of the NPP would like to know what is there in the Report. They would not want it to lie and collect dust just like the Osafo Maafo Report after the 2020 elections.
The NPP members trust that a good job may have been done by the likes of Prof. Akuoko but their thoughts are inextricably intertwined by the words of Nikita Khrushchev: “Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build bridges even when there are no rivers”.
