The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered the temporary closure of the Ehi Police Station in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region, following a violent mob attack on Monday, November 4, 2025.

The station’s personnel have since been relocated to nearby Dzodze.

The attack occurred after the police’s refusal to hand over a suspect, who had sought refuge at the station, having allegedly stabbed a man to death.

The mob injured several officers, including the District Commander, Chief Superintendent William Gyamfi.

The suspect was initially rescued by police reinforcements, but was later attacked again, sustaining severe injuries, taken for dead and dumped in a gutter.

The latest, brings to three (3), the number of violent mob attacks on Police Stations within forty-four (44) days, which actions attracted similar sanctions from the Chief Constable of Ghana.

First on the roll call was Kukurantumi in the Abuakwa North Municipality of the Eastern Region, where a suspect in custody fell sick and subsequently became unconscious.

He was subsequently rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. This triggered violent action by some irate youth who attempted to set ablaze the station and vandalised part of the facility.

Hooligans

On Wednesday, October 29, 2025 hooligans besieged the Nsuaem Police Station in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality in the Western Region, vandalised property and set several motorbikes on fire.

It would be recalled that members of the community arrested one Sulley Moses, on suspicion of attempting to kidnap two school children.

Later, the same day, a mob of about five hundred (500) people, armed with offensive weapons stormed the station, demanding his release to them, and when the police would not succumb, resorted to the violent mob attack.

The Chief of Ehi, Togbe Dzebleadukpo has meanwhile appealed to the IGP to reconsider the closure, citing concerns for the community’s safety and security.

According to him, the community had already embarked on plans to renovate the station to facilitate its reopening.

Col Festus Aboagye (Rtd)

When contacted for his opinion on these attacks on the police, a Security Analyst, Col Festus Aboagye (Rtd) attributed the development to the lack of regular reshuffles of police personnel.

He told The Chronicle that familiarity could breed contempt, negatively impacting officers’ performance.

He went on that, police officers choose to gain exposure and experience when moved around by way of transfers, but the opposite, is counterproductive.

Col Aboagye (Rtd) believes regular transfers would help prevent complacency and improve performance.

In a related development, Police have made a major breakthrough in the area of carjacking by apprehending two persons linked to car robbery in Kumasi.

Information available to The Chronicle reveals that on Friday November 7, 2025 a man was robbed of his unregistered Hyundai Tucson at Mpatasie, near St Anthony Hospital, in Kumasi.

That, the occupants escaped from Kumasi, drove the vehicle and headed towards Accra.

The dreaded Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, on receipt of the information activated its intelligence gathering sources.

On Saturday, November 8, 2025 a squad from the unit on surveillance spotted the robbed car with about four occupants moving along the Ofankor Barrier-St John’s general area, off the Accra-Nsawam highway.

The team quickly intercepted the car for the arrest of the suspects. Sensing danger, the suspected gangsters attempted to bolt with the car.

However, on discovery they have been cornered, amid rapid fire from the deadly squad, literally surrendered by abandoning the vehicle and escaped.

During a chase, two of the robbery suspects, namely, Issaka Jamal, 30, and Kwadwo Badu, 40, were overpowered, found to have sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment.
