Hundreds of residents both within and outside Nyamekrom participated in the screening exercise.

In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 which ensures healthy living and promoting the well-being for all, GapBuster Inc., a U.S.-based non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with local and international health partners, has organised a two-day free health screening for residents of Nyamekrom and surrounding communities in the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The health outreach, held in partnership with the Ghana Health Service, Koforidua SDA Hospital, Elijeko Foundation, Health Access, Hope Foundation and other health organisations aimed at offering basic health services to underserved communities.

Bridging the Health Gap

Dr. Yvette Butler-Yeboah, Executive Director of GapBuster Inc., explained that the initiative was designed to help individuals become aware of their health status and receive appropriate care and medication.

“Many people here cannot afford healthcare. It is our responsibility as individuals and as a government to invest in the well-being of citizens,” she emphasised.

She further explained that participants in the screening exercise were referred to appropriate health facilities for follow-up care and treatment, with medications also provided on-site.

“You can’t separate spirituality from healthcare both go hand in hand. Medical missions are as vital as spiritual missions,” she added.

International Support and Vision

According to Dr. Butler-Yeboah, the mission received over 1,000 pounds of donated medical supplies, including 300 pounds of medication from organizations based in the United States.

She expressed hope to expand similar initiatives to neighboring countries such as Burkina Faso and Nigeria in the future.

“There is a great need and while we can’t do everything, we aim to generate more support and bring more medical professionals annually to various locations,” she stated.

She acknowledged the logistical challenges faced but praised the community’s enthusiasm and support. A mobile health van equipped with healthcare professionals and a laboratory unit was deployed to support the screenings throughout the municipality.

Tackling Hidden Health Issues

Dr. Janifer Adu Frempong, a volunteer medical practitioner, highlighted the importance of early detection and routine screening.

“We are here to provide free care, screening, and medication, particularly for those battling hidden or untreated health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and infectious diseases,” she said.

She assured the public that the coalition of NGOs remains committed to identifying and addressing the most pressing health issues in the community.

Local Health Authority Commends Effort

The Municipal Health Director for New Juaben South, Ms. Eunice Abuaku, expressed her gratitude to the volunteers and supporting organisations for their impactful service.

“This initiative has not only provided free medications and screenings but also offered referrals and counselling for further treatment. It’s a huge boost for local healthcare delivery,” she noted.

Ms. Abuaku also urged residents to prioritize their health and take part in regular screening, stressing that early detection of diseases saves lives.

She cautioned against poor dietary habits and lifestyle choices, which are significant contributors to rising cases of chronic illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes.

The Nyamekrom health fair by GapBuster Inc. underscores the urgent need for collaborative health interventions and continued investment in community wellness.

The program reflects a growing recognition that accessible healthcare must be a shared responsibility between government, civil society and international partners.
